How to Choose the Right Diffuser for Your Home

"The right diffuser doesn't just fill a room with scent — it changes the feeling of being in it."

If you've never owned a diffuser, or if the one you have sits gathering dust because it's fiddly or the scent isn't right — this is for you.

There are three main types, and they work quite differently. Here's how to choose the one that fits your life.

Ultrasonic diffusers — the everyday workhorse

This is what most people mean when they say "diffuser." An ultrasonic diffuser uses water and ultrasonic vibrations to create a fine mist of water and essential oil. They run for 4–10 hours, depending on the size, and they're gentle enough to leave on while you sleep.

Best for: Bedrooms, living rooms, any space where you want continuous, ambient scent. Ideal if you're new to diffusing.

What to look for: A tank of at least 200ml (the bigger the tank, the longer it runs). A warm LED option rather than colour-cycling lights. A quiet motor — you should barely know it's on.

Glass diffusers — for people who care about aesthetics

A glass diffuser uses a small amount of oil directly — no water required. The result is a purer, more intense scent. It also tends to look significantly better on a shelf.

Best for: Smaller spaces (offices, reading nooks, bathrooms) or anyone who wants the diffuser to be part of the decor as much as the function.

What to look for: Handblown or hand-shaped glass. A minimal, considered design. Check the oil capacity — some are very small and need refilling daily.

Reed diffusers — set and forget

No electricity. No water. No timer to set. Reed diffusers work passively — natural rattan reeds absorb the oil and release the scent slowly, continuously, over weeks.

Best for: Entranceways, bathrooms, any space where you want a constant, subtle base note of scent. Also the most gifting-friendly option.

What to look for: A 100ml bottle will last 6–8 weeks. Flip the reeds once a week to refresh the intensity. Store away from direct sunlight — it degrades the oil.

Which oils to start with

If you're new to aromatherapy, start with three:

  • Eucalyptus — cool, clarifying, clean. For mornings and workspaces.
  • Lavender — calming, familiar, soft. For evenings and sleep.
  • Sandalwood or cedarwood — warm, grounding, earthy. For living rooms and slow afternoons.

These three will cover most moods and most rooms. Everything else is exploration.
